MSA-San Diego hosted its second annual Olympics on May 28th.
The 3rd Annual Comet Cook-off was a delicious success
Our eleven home room classes each represented a different country and spent several weeks creating flags, posters and jerseys for their respective countries. The campus resembled the Los Angeles Coliseum or other famous Olympic hosting arenas on the day of the event. The countries represented were from continents all over the world and included: USA, Canada, Madagascar, Fiji, Bhutan, South Korea, Mexico, Djibouti, Germany, Jamaica and Japan.
The day kicked off with opening ceremonies, and each country participated in the “Parade of Countries,” taking a lap around the track to the tune of their nation’s anthem. Eighth grader Kelly Prendergast performed a beautiful rendition of our nation's anthem, and received a tremendous applause from the students, staff and parents. Fellow eighth grade classmate, Ryan Willkomm took the “Athlete’s Oath,” speaking on behalf of all the participating athletes, promising to compete fairly and respectively throughout the event. Mr. Boyles took the “Judges Oath,” speaking on behalf of all the judges, promising to judge each heat with the utmost integrity and fairness. After the conclusion of the opening ceremonies, the games were ready to begin.
Each and every student participated in six different events that were spread out all over the campus including: the 400 Meter Race, Agility Relay, Jump Rope Contest, Free Throw Shootout, Soccer Ball Juggle, and the Standing Broad Jump. It seemed as if every student were competing in the actual Olympic Games, as they gave hundred and ten percent effort in every event. The loud cheers from the supporting parents helped to keep the students motivated throughout the day. Perhaps the highlight of the day was the 400 meter relay, where the qualifying students from each homeroom class competed against their grade level counterparts.
The games concluded with each of the winning students being presented with their medals and ribbons. All in all it was a monumental day for our school and perfect way to conclude a grueling week of testing.
